Placement and evaluation
Before joining any of the programs, students must take an online placement test that assesses their writing and reading skills. This is used to determine the study plan for each student. Upon arrival, a thorough speech assessment finalizes the class the student is expected to attend and whether additional lessons are needed.

Assessment of student progress
These progress tests are used to track progress and include language concentration, functional language, vocabulary and pronunciation based on bi-weekly units. Student test results are recorded and appropriate feedback is provided to the student.
Mid-term tests are used to determine the progress of students at mid-term. This is a paper test comprising grammar, functional language, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and writing based on the first half of the content of the course book. Our instructors record the results and provide individual reports to the students before the end of the test week, to be handed over to the students, stakeholders, agents and / or parents.
The end-of-course exam is used to determine whether the student has mastered the skills and fluency of their current level. It guides the instructor's decision as to whether the student is ready to advance to the next level or not. The paper test includes grammar, functional language, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and writing based on the overall content of the course book. An individual student report is completed and feedback is provided to inform students of their level transfer, if successful.
The weekly speech monitoring and evaluation of our students ensures their aptitude in the general English-speaking world. Our individual student reports provide insight into the assessment of students' pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary range, as well as overall mastery for their level. Students cannot progress to the next level without successfully adhering to these essential criteria.
The report provides individual feedback to students at mid-term and at the end of their level. They indicate whether the student is ready to move up a level or not and also provide information about the student's test scores throughout the course. The reports also provide information on their speaking level, attitude to learning, attendance and participation in class. Reports allow the instructor to best advise student progress.
Student progression
We use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to determine the level of English of our students. There are six levels, ranging from A1 (elementary) to C2 (mastery) and we offer an additional beginner level for students who have never studied English before.
The hours per level have been designed according to Cambridge English guidelines, in terms of recommended guided learning hours. Each level at ES Dubai includes 180 lessons of 45 minutes each, plus a recommended self-study time of 45 additional hours over 12 weeks if you are studying semi-intensively and 6 weeks if you are taking the intensive program.
